Paul Griffiths graduated in Law from Cardiff
University. He qualified as a solicitor in 1979, joined Bentleys in 1983 and
became a partner in 1985.
In common with others in the practice who principally
work on the "dry" side of shipping litigation/arbitration, he has gained experience
in a wide range of disputes and related non contentious work including:-
Time/voyage charterparty and bill of lading
disputes, with particular emphasis on those concerning
safe ports, war risks, "bad" bunkers, delays, on/off hire, voyage failures,
general average and all
jurisdictional issues which arise out of them;
Insurance policy advice to both hull, P&I and
cargo insurers/assured on partial/total loss or damage
to vessel/cargo/property and dealing with any claim or dispute arising by
way of subrogation or
otherwise. Specific policy advice to insurers/assured on charterers' liability
to hull policies;
Advice and dealing with disputes arising under
letters of credit, including alleged fraud;
Sale of goods and commodity dispute resolution
generally and at GAFTA and FOSFA in particular;
Advice in connection with, and dealing with
the consequences of, marine casualties including wreck
removal and pollution (civil and criminal);
Ship sale and purchase disputes;
Litigation and claims arising out of personal
injury or death;
Road carriage claims arising under international
convention or other terms;
General commercial drafting of contracts in connection with marine/transport
related work, including
standard terms of trade and one-off contracts to suit particular needs, including
ship/yacht building,
joint venture agreements and charterparties;
The underlying issues of arrest, injunctions
and obtaining security in connection with the above.
Paul has presented various papers in connection
with issues arising out of insurance policies, safe ports, charterparties
and legal costs at organised seminars and those tailored to particular clients'
requirements.
