Oz de Sybel joined Bentleys, Stokes and Lowless in August 1989 having graduated with an Arts degree from the University of East Anglia, qualifying as a barrister and spending 10 years as an “in-house” lawyer with the West of England P & I Club. Oz requalified as a solicitor in 1991 and became a partner of the firm in 1993. He also has an LL.M. in Maritime Law and Jurisprudence from London University.

He has a wide range of experience in both shipping and insurance-related matters with an emphasis on:-

 High Court litigation and maritime arbitration arising out of maritime casualties including
     charterparty and bill of lading disputes;

 Sale of goods disputes;

 General average;

 Agency disputes;

 Advising on injunctions, arrest of vessels for security and enforcement purposes in the UK and
     abroad;

 Advising in connection with insurance contract wordings and cover disputes including P & I and hull
     policies.

As well as having contributed to trade journals with articles on voyage charterparties, laytime/demurrage issues and charterer’s P & I cover, Oz has also lectured both in the UK and abroad on shipping and insurance-related subjects.

Oz is a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators’ Association and the Association Francaise du Droit Maritime.
