Joe Quain is a solicitor/Master Mariner with 20 years experience at sea in all ranks from Cadet to Master. He served on a variety of vessel types including general, reefer and bulk cargo vessels trading world-wide and offshore support vessels including anchor-handling tugs, supply vessels and both mono-hull and semi-submersible, dynamically positioned (DP) multi-role support vessels. Offshore work included dive support, offshore construction, cable laying and drilling.

In the summer of 1992 he graduated from the University of Leeds with an Honours degree in Law before passing The Law Society finals examination and training as a solicitor with Bentleys Stokes and Lowless. He was admitted in 1995 and became a partner in January 1997. Joe is a member of The Lloyds Salvage Group.

He has experience in all aspects of Admiralty litigation including:-

 High Court litigation and maritime arbitration arising out of marine casualties;

 Investigating and advising on liability and claims arising from collisions between ships;

 Advising on and handling litigation and arbitration arising out of salvage services both on behalf of
     salvor claimants and ship/cargo respondents;

  Negotiating settlement of liability and quantum in relation to collision and salvage claims;

 Advising on limitation of liability under the 1976 and 1957 Limitation Conventions;

 Advising on jurisdiction and handling the arrest of vessels for security and enforcement purposes;

 Advising on and handling litigation arising from damage to fixed and floating objects;

  Investigating and advising in relation to total losses;

 Investigating and advising in connection with pollution claims;

 Advising in connection with charterparty and bill of lading disputes such as, stevedore damage,
     unsafe berth and cargo shortage claims;

 Advising in relation to unsafe port, hull and machinery damage claims and speed and consumption
     claims.
